History of Ch Sprig of Houghton Hill

Ch Sprig of Houghton Hill was a 12 3/4 inch tricolor dog (in size by the standard then current), bred by Mrs. E. Baker of Houghton Hill Kennels, in England, and whelped February 10, 1930. He was selected by Mrs. Dreer for her Anahassitt Kennels, and his US registration appears in the November 1931 Stud Book.

This dog was reportedly detested by J. Nate Levine, who had previously imported Ch Wee Laird o'Downfield, sired by a dog of very similar bloodlines, for Anahassitt Kennels. Sprig was nevertheless good enough to finish and sired one Champion, Ch Anahassitt Aphrodite, who bred on for Astolat Kennels. Note that 7/8 of his pedigree was pure Chestnut cross. He carries on in a minor way through Astolat and Pocono lines, the latter through his son Artful Dodger of Anahassitt. Sprig was Line CHE Part III and Family 3C.
