History of Kilravock Lassie

Kilravock Lassie was the first Sheltie registered in the United States after World War I, and the first import to appear behind modern lines via offspring whelped in the US. (US Ch Lerwick Rex has descendants through offspring whelped in England before he was imported to the US, but nothing he produced here bred on.) Lassie was a full sister to Chestnut Rainbow, sire of the famed Chestnut cross. She was a sable bitch, bred by Mr. Cusin and whelped October 11, 1922 in Scotland. She appears in the September 1923 AKC Stud Book as owned by E. R. Stettinius. At some point between then and mid-1925 Lassie was acquired by Catherine Coleman (Sheltieland), and bred to Eng Ch Walesby Select (also imported by E. R. Stettinius) to produce Prince Charlie (who as far as I can tell does not come into modern pedigrees.)

Lassie plays a minute if consistant part in modern pedigrees - less than a tenth of a percent. But her influence in attracting Catherine Coleman to the breed was enormous. It is worth pointing out that she is the only import behind modern ROM pedigrees not known to have any Collie crosses behind her. She was line CHE and Family 3.
