Ch Downfield Grethe was the full older sister of Ch Wee Laird o'Downfield, bred by Mrs. J. C. Ramsay and whelped September 16, 1927. Like her brother, she was selected and imported for Anahassitt by J. Nate Levine. For some reason her color was not recorded in her registration in the AKC Stud Book in July 1929. Her sire was a tricolor, and the details of the markings around the eyes in the few photographs I have been able to find suggest that she was a dark shaded sable.
Grethe is in Line CHE and Family 2, and her tail female line through Can Ch Nattie Gallagher o'Page's Hill still produces an occasional Champion. She accounts fairly consistently for 6 to 7% of modern American Sheltie pedigrees, with almost all of that contribution coming through her daughter by Ch Wee Laird o'Downfield, Jean of Anahassitt, the dam of Ch Mowgli ROM. It should be noted that Jean was produced while J. Nate Levine was handling the breeding at Anahassitt, and it has been suggested that she was in fact a Collie cross.
Please note that I left out Grethe's Championship by accident when I was setting up these files, and I may not have corrected this error everywhere it occurs. She is a Champion.
