The earliest Shelties registered with the Kennel Club

The first Kennel Gazette (corresponding to the AKC Stud Book) showing a Sheltie registration was dated March, 1909. This first registration (and indeed all registrations through May 1909) was shown as a Shetland Collie under "Any other variety, British, Foreign and Colonial."

Following a short break when no Shelties appeared in the Gazette (probably duing the dispute with the Collie breeders over the breed's name), the month of October 1909 had 12 new registrations, but with a difference. Although Shelties were still registered as "Any other breed", they had a new name: Shetland Sheepdogs. Further registrations in 1909 included the earliest dogs known to appear behind modern pedigrees. These dogs are in bold type.
