History of Ch Sheltieland Kiltie o'Sea Isle

In 1944 Catherine Coleman (Sheltieland) purchased a California-bred puppy bitch, Ch Sheltieland Peg o'the Picts, who finished her Championship in 1946. Peg, like Ch Sheltieland Shasta Geronimo ROM, was a daughter of Ch Mountaineer o'Page's Hill ROM, but Peg's dam was Ch Pinafore o'the Picts. Pinafore's sire was of Chestnut cross breeding (Ch Bodachan of Clerwood x Ch Ashbank Fairy, both imports) and her dam was by Ch Mowgli ROM x Pickaninny o'Page's Hill, who combined Page's Hill with early Sheltieland breeding. Peg was mated to Ch Bogota Blaze, who combined Pocono lines with those from Keep Goin' ROM (Ch Rockwood Laddie's parents were Ch Ardland Artist and Ch Ardland Adorable, two of Keep Goin's Champions) and the China Clipper daughter Black Thimble of Tavistock. One result of this breeding was the sable and white male, Ch Sheltieland Kiltie o'Sea Isle

Kiltie was traded to Sea Isle, where his influence greatly exceeded that suggested by his producing record. Like his grandsire, Mountaineer, his influence on modern pedigrees comes primarily through his daughters, though there are still Shelties around today who trace tail male to his ROM son, Ch Kawartha's Match Maker ROM, the foundation sire of Mar Jan Kennels, which in turn heavily influenced such modern kennels as September. Kiltie himself, bred to the older Sea Isle sable lines, produced some of the best of the bitches to which the later Sea Isle acquisition, Ch Nashcrest Golden Note ROM, was bred. Analysis of the pedigree of Ch Halstors Peter Pumpkin ROM shows that Kiltie actually plays a stronger part in Peter's pedigree than does Note.

Kiltie was a sable and white dog, whelped December 19, 1947. He sired 9 Champions, 2 of whom were ROM Shelties and a third was the dam of 4 Champions including a Ch-ROM bitch. In addition, his daughter Ch Sea Isle Sandra was the dam of Ch Sea Isle Serenata, dam of 3 Champions including Ch Sea Isle Serenade ROM, and Ch Colvidale Soliloquy was the dam of 3 Champions including Ch Sea Isle Rhapsody of Halstor, Peter's dam. Many of Kiltie's non Champion daughters also carried on. Kiltie was in Line CHE Part I and Family 5 Part I.

Kiltie excelled in muzzle, head planes and ears, but did not carry as much coat as Ch Nashcrest Golden Note ROM, and he was not nearly the showman that Note was.
